Typing the address again?

Proxy Companion finds it.

Start MonoProxy on your phone, then choose the discovered service on Mac. No copying an IP address or port.

Another proxy password prompt?

Let Proxy Companion sign in.

Save your proxy credentials in Keychain. Proxy Companion authenticates with the phone service on behalf of connected apps.

An app ignores system proxy?

Give it a proxy path.

Transparent mode handles eligible app connections, so the app does not need to read macOS proxy settings.

Picking a proxy again?

Let Proxy Companion try the next.

Enable automatic failover to try eligible saved proxies in order, while keeping your connection mode.

Connect in three steps

Start on your phone.
Finish on your Mac.

  1. 1

    Start MonoProxy

Set the proxy service’s username and password on your iPhone if you want authentication, then start the service.

  2. 2

    Discover on Mac

Keep both devices on the same local network. Add the discovered phone as a configuration; enter the same proxy credentials if required.

  3. 3

    Connect

Connect the saved configuration. Approve the network extension the first time you use transparent mode, then check the connection status on both devices.

A companion with room to grow

SOCKS5, HTTP and per-app proxy rules for Mac.

HTTP and SOCKS5 proxy chains

Send rules to different upstreams. Build TCP chains without silently falling back to a direct connection.

UDP and DNS policies

Proxy, connect directly or block based on upstream capabilities. Resolve through a SOCKS5 upstream.

Recover your network settings

Restore the system proxy changes Proxy Companion made while preserving changes made elsewhere.

Credentials in Keychain

Keep authentication in macOS Keychain. Exported configurations do not contain passwords.

Check without reconnecting

Test upstream paths with configurable HTTP/HTTPS targets without switching your active configuration.

Portable configurations

Import and export rules and proxy references while keeping credential identities separate.

A keyboard-friendly workspace

FAQ

Mac proxy setup: common questions.

How do I use a SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy on Mac?

Add the proxy host, port and any required credentials in Proxy Companion. Choose transparent mode to route eligible app connections with per-app rules, or configure proxy-aware apps to use the local relay. You need an existing upstream proxy; the app does not supply hosted servers.

Can I route one Mac app through a proxy?

Yes. In transparent mode, create an application rule to use a proxy, connect directly or block eligible connections. TCP rules can also match destinations and ports. Local destinations and some system traffic have exceptions.

Where do the proxy username and password come from?

Enter and set the username and password for this proxy service in the iOS app’s authentication settings. When enabled, connecting from Proxy Companion requires that same username and password. Save them in Mac Keychain if you want Proxy Companion to reuse them, and update the saved values after changing them on your phone.

What happens when the phone’s network changes?

MonoProxy attempts to recover on the originally selected network interface. It waits if that interface is unavailable rather than silently switching to another interface. Existing sessions may be interrupted. Check iOS connection diagnostics, review the discovered device and configuration on Mac, then reconnect if needed.

Is Proxy Companion the Mac version of MonoProxy?

No. MonoProxy runs a proxy server on your iPhone. Proxy Companion is the Mac app that discovers that service and helps your Mac use it. It also supports other standard HTTP, HTTPS CONNECT and SOCKS5 proxies.

What does automatic discovery need?

Keep the proxy service enabled in MonoProxy and both devices on the same local network. Allow local-network access when prompted. If discovery is unavailable, add the service address and port manually.

How does Proxy Companion avoid repeated proxy sign-in?

Enter the phone service’s proxy credentials in Proxy Companion and save them in Keychain. For connections it manages, Proxy Companion authenticates with the upstream so apps do not need to sign in separately. If the phone’s credentials change, update them in Proxy Companion. Unrelated website or macOS permission prompts are unaffected.

How does automatic switching work?

Enable Automatic failover and order your saved configurations. When connecting, Proxy Companion tries eligible backups in the same mode; compatibility-mode sessions can also switch after detected failures. A failed established transparent-mode session blocks proxied traffic and retries its current upstream. Discovery refresh does not switch a working connection, and switching may interrupt existing sessions.

What does transparent mode do?

It handles eligible app connections through a network extension, including apps that ignore system proxy settings. Rules decide whether to proxy, connect directly or block. Local destinations and some system traffic have exceptions. Compatibility mode uses the system proxy settings instead.

Does Proxy Companion include a proxy service?

Proxy Companion connects to an upstream; it does not supply hosted proxy servers. Use the service running in MonoProxy on your phone, or add an existing standard proxy.

What about UDP and DNS?

UDP proxying requires a standalone SOCKS5 upstream with UDP support. TCP chains do not proxy UDP. HTTP/HTTPS upstreams default to blocking UDP and using system DNS. UDP routing matches apps, not destinations or ports.

Which proxy chains are supported?

TCP supports up to three preceding nodes plus a terminal proxy. HTTP CONNECT and SOCKS5 can be chained. HTTPS is supported only as the first hop; nested TLS and HTTPS terminal proxies are not supported.

What is included in exported reports?

Connection exports capture the filtered records and capture time before you save. JSON and CSV exclude application identifiers, destinations and rule names unless you opt in; transport error details are always excluded. Direct and blocked connections have no measured byte totals. Diagnostic reports contain only event stages, result codes and times.
